🚨 Reservist wounded in checkpoint attack: An Israeli reservist in his 30s was seriously wounded in a car-ramming attack at the Maccabim checkpoint in Judea and Samaria, according to military, police and medical reports. Channel 14 identified him as Neriah Leiter, a son of Israel’s ambassador to the United States, Yechiel Leiter. Medical officials reported him in serious condition at Jerusalem’s Shaare Zedek Hospital, while preliminary reporting and reports identifying Leiter described his condition as critical.
Police said the assailant accelerated toward a police cruiser, running over the soldier, who was operating alongside a police officer. IDF troops opened fire and eliminated the terrorist. Magen David Adom said medics treated the unconscious soldier at the scene. Police clarified that he was a reservist, correcting an initial identification as a police officer.
The IDF placed the attack in the Binyamin Regional Brigade’s area and sent additional troops, who established roadblocks and continued operating nearby. Reports agreed on the Maccabim location but differed on the road number: Magen David Adom cited Route 443, while police cited Route 433.
Ambassador Leiter is on his way to Israel. Another of his sons, Moshe Leiter, was killed fighting Hamas in northern Gaza in November 2023. A prayer gathering for Neriah’s recovery is being organized at the Western Wall for 11:00 PM on the night of the report.
🛡️ Command reinforcement in Judea and Samaria: Following a fresh situational assessment, IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir directed the 98th Division headquarters to operate in Judea and Samaria and assume command of the Judea and Etzion regional brigades. The rare move follows several recent terrorist attacks and heightened security concerns.
The brigades cover southern Judea and Samaria and normally report to the Judea and Samaria Division, whose command burden the transfer will ease. The 98th Division’s organic units are not deploying as part of the move. The military said activating its headquarters would strengthen command and control and improve defensive and offensive capabilities during the tense period.
🇺🇳 Netanyahu previews UN speech and brief visit: Netanyahu said his UN speech, scheduled for the day after his remarks, would contain surprises. Israeli security sources told Channel 13 that he would leave Israel on the night of their report, arrive in New York the following morning and return that evening, without spending a night in the city for security reasons.
