❗️ SUSPECT NEUTRALIZED, PUBLIC ALERT ENDED: Montreal authorities have lifted the emergency alert issued earlier for an armed and dangerous suspect in the Côte-des-Neiges district, stating that the immediate threat to the public has ended and shelter-in-place orders have been lifted. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to determine the motive and full sequence of events.
Earlier in the day, a major police operation was launched after a shooting in Montreal's heavily Jewish Côte-des-Neiges neighborhood. Initial reports indicated that two police officers and one civilian were shot. Authorities later confirmed the suspect was neutralized following a confrontation with police.
Throughout the incident, numerous reports circulated regarding additional suspects, arrests, fatalities, and possible links to nearby Jewish institutions. Some reports claimed that one police officer and a Jewish civilian, identified as Moshe Mizrachi, had succumbed to their wounds. Authorities have not yet confirmed all of those reports, and current information suggests the shooting was not directed at the Jewish community.
According to local reports, the shooting occurred near a kosher supermarket and a Chabad House. Residents received an emergency alert instructing them: “If you are in the affected area, shelter indoors, lock the doors, stay away from windows and follow instructions of local authorities." Police urged the public to avoid the area during the manhunt.
Chabad emissary to Montreal, Rabbi Chaim Shlomo Cohen, told Ynet that the shooting occurred near the Chabad House. He said police evacuated civilians from nearby hotels to the Chabad House, adding: "There are a hundred of us here, the volunteers and the people who were brought here. I was sitting in my office, and suddenly the police came in, said that it was forbidden to leave the building, and evacuated people from hotels to us. We are fine."
A ZAKA volunteer described the incident as difficult and said the community was in shock, while stressing that local authorities were still investigating. MK Dan Illouz, who was born in Montreal, said that "the quiet of the house where I grew up was disturbed." He said official conclusions have not yet been published, but added that the fear this may have been an attack against Jews "tells the whole story."
Authorities have not released final investigative conclusions. Police are continuing to examine the circumstances surrounding the shooting, including motive, the full sequence of events, and whether any additional individuals were involved.
