🔸 Trump reports three-hour talks with Iranian officials: President Trump said a U.S. delegation that included special envoys Witkoff and Kushner held a three-hour meeting with Iranian officials on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly. He described the talks as 'very good and very productive' and said another meeting was scheduled for the 'very near future', without providing further details.
On the prospect of a meeting involving President Trump himself, CNN reported that he had told advisers he wanted to meet Iranian officials attending the General Assembly in New York if 'the conditions are right'. CNN said no such meeting had been scheduled.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said: "We are open to a meeting with Iran at the UN". He also said: "Trump is open to meeting with Pezeshkian, but we need to know that the ultimate decision-maker in Iran is the Supreme Leader, and he is a radical Shia cleric".
⚠️ Rubio pledges Saudi support as Gulf states seek restraint: Rubio said: "The conflict between the Houthis and Saudi Arabia is dangerous, and we will always stand with Riyadh and support it".
He added: "We have a defense agreement with Saudi Arabia. We intend to live up to our commitments on it. We are working to see if this can be fixed, but ultimately, if it comes down to it, the U.S. will always stand with Saudi Arabia and support them".
Bloomberg reported ahead of a Tuesday meeting with President Trump in New York that Gulf Arab states planned to urge him to avoid further escalation with Iran. Gulf Cooperation Council officials, including representatives of Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Qatar, coordinated their positions before the talks. They want to end a conflict that has disrupted trade and damaged their economies.
⚓ Iranian sources deny reported Hormuz reopening offer: According to the IRGC-affiliated Fars News Agency, Iranian sources rejected reports by Kyodo and Reuters that Tehran was prepared to reopen the Strait of Hormuz within seven days if U.S. military pressure was reduced and port blockades were lifted.
The reports suggested possible progress in Iran-U.S. negotiations and briefly pushed oil prices lower. Iranian officials called them 'inaccurate' and 'baseless'.
✈️ Restrictions affect Iranian flights to Azerbaijan, Baghdad and Muscat: The Azerbaijani Civil Aviation Authority said: "Due to sanctions imposed by the US on Iran's aviation sector, flights operated by Iranian airlines to Azerbaijan have been suspended as of September 22, 2026".
The Iranian Civil Aviation Authority said: "Starting at midnight tonight, Baghdad and Muscat airports will no longer receive Iranian flights. We are currently holding consultations to divert flights destined for Baghdad to Najaf Airport. Our international flights, including to Istanbul, are operating according to schedule".

President Trump will compare the September 11 attacks to the October 7 massacre in his UN speech and declare: “We will no longer allow threats against us to gain a foothold anywhere in the Western Hemisphere. If necessary, we will use our military might, which is second to none.”
