๐ฎ๐ฑ ROME TALKS ON THE LEBANON CEASEFIRE BEGIN AS TURKEY EXPANDS ITS SYRIAN PRESENCE, ISRAEL DETAINS BORDER CROSSERS
๐ธ Lebanon-Israel ceasefire talks to open in Rome: Lebanese-Israeli negotiations are scheduled to begin Tuesday in Rome to consolidate the ceasefire and advance implementation of proposed "pilot zones," following an Italian initiative based on a tripartite division of roles between France, Italy, and Switzerland, according to Lebanese media.
Diplomatic sources say the talks will be overseen by the U.S. State Department. The Lebanese delegation includes Ambassador Simon Karam, Ambassador Nada Mouawad, and presidential advisor Brig. Gen. Ziad Heikal. Reports indicate the Lebanese military delegation will not participate directly, with technical coordination expected between U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) and political negotiators to facilitate the pilot zones formula.
Ministerial sources report positive discussions between the Lebanese Army and U.S. observers regarding deployment synchronized with what they describe as "Israel's withdrawal" from occupied towns. Lebanese media further claim Prime Minister Netanyahu has opposed recognizing "experimental zones" and explicit withdrawal clauses, citing parliamentary elections, while limiting deployment to non-occupied areas as a test of Lebanese control. President Joseph Aoun continues to press for comprehensive Lebanese Army deployment following a meeting with CENTCOM Admiral Brad Cooper. U.S. Ambassador Michel Issa is reportedly open to amending the proposed framework agreement to help resolve the impasse and reach a final settlement.
Regional media also report continued pressure for the Lebanese Army to enforce pilot areas in Zawtar al-Sharqiyah, Zawtar al-Gharbiyah, Frun, al-Ghandouriyah, Qalawiyah, and Burj Qalawiyah, where the U.S. and Israel reportedly insist all weapons south of the Litani River be removed.
Reports describe heightened tensions around Ali Taher Hill, where Israel is said to maintain a tight siege while Hezbollah opposes Lebanese Army deployment and has warned that any offensive action would mean the ceasefire has collapsed, risking a return to a pre-2000 occupation scenario across Mount Rihan and Iqlim al-Tuffah.
Some diplomatic sources quoted by Lebanese media also express concern that renewed escalation could undermine the reported U.S.-Iran memorandum, while Washington is said to be pressing Israel to separate the Lebanese and Iranian tracks and preserve Lebanese neutrality. Lebanese and U.S. officials are also reportedly seeking Israeli withdrawal from the proposed pilot zones before the Rome talks begin.
โ Turkish Navy visits Syria: For the first time since the start of the Syrian civil war, Turkish Navy warships have arrived at the Syrian port of Latakia. Turkey's Defense Ministry confirmed that the Commander of the Turkish Navy is aboard the TCG Istanbul during the visit.
โ Israeli civilians detained attempting to enter Syria: The IDF reports that several Israeli civilians attempted to illegally cross into Syria from the southern Golan Heights. Troops prevented the crossing, detained the individuals, and transferred them to Israel Police.
The military said this follows several similar incidents in recent days and strongly condemned the actions, stressing that illegally crossing the border is a criminal offense that endangers civilians, disrupts IDF operational activity, and diverts commanders and troops from their security missions. The IDF called on law enforcement authorities to prosecute those involved and take decisive action to prevent further incidents.
The activists identified themselves as the Bashan Pioneers, a group that has repeatedly attempted to enter Syria over the past year while advocating for the establishment of Israeli settlements in the area. The group has also received support from several coalition lawmakers.
