The Nahal Brigade’s battalions are moving to new sectors within Judea and Samaria after combining defensive duties with proactive operations to thwart terrorist threats. Their deployment followed two months of ground operations in southern Lebanon beginning with “Roaring Lion.”
Maj. Y., a company commander in the 50th Battalion, described the transition from advancing deep into enemy territory to maintaining a sustained presence, taking the initiative and responding rapidly to incidents in a civilian environment.
Alongside manning positions and prolonged defensive missions, troops conducted planned operations, searches and arrests in areas of suspected terrorist activity. One targeted operation, planned according to conditions on the ground, uncovered weapons and led to several suspects’ arrests. Battalion forces also operated near a main route to help enable its opening to civilian traffic.
“Defense is our most important objective, but that does not mean we wait for something to happen,” Maj. Y. said. He emphasized reaching locations where threats could develop and acting proactively while operating appropriately among civilians.
Training continued alongside operational duties, including company- and platoon-level exercises, commanders’ training days and professional training. Maj. Y. said operational missions also offered opportunities to practice, maintain readiness and apply lessons learned.
As the battalions relocate, they must learn the terrain, understand its characteristics and adapt their methods to the mission. “The most important thing at this stage is adaptation,” Maj. Y. said, adding that discussions with soldiers help them understand both what is required and why.
