⚠️ LEBANON TALKS, EILAT SECURITY CONCERNS AND DEBATE OVER IDF FREEDOM OF ACTION
🔸 LEBANON WITHDRAWAL DISCUSSIONS CONTINUE: Israeli sources indicated that the Israeli and Lebanese teams are expected to determine pilot areas that will be transferred to the Lebanese Army. One Israeli source said the IDF will be forced to partially withdraw from the Yellow Line.
Another Israeli source told CNN: "Israel is considering announcing symbolic withdrawals from territories in southern Lebanon. The symbolic withdrawals will include the withdrawal of some forces from areas along the Yellow Line".
Lebanese President Joseph Aoun stated: "We welcome any assistance to end the war, but we distinguish between assistance and interference in internal affairs. Our country is sovereign, and no one negotiates on its behalf".
The statement was likely directed at Iran, amid Tehran's public role in discussing Lebanon-related arrangements.
🛰️ IRANIAN OFFICERS REPORTEDLY ACTIVE IN SOUTHERN LEBANON: A senior Israeli security official told Al Arabiya that several Iranian officers involved in managing the fighting and coordinating operational activity are operating in the Tair area of southern Lebanon.
According to the official, concerns for their safety were among the main factors behind Iran's insistence on halting the ground operation in the area, a claim that helps explain Tehran's focus on the Lebanese theater in the talks.
🛡️ SHIN BET CHIEF ORDERS PREPARATIONS FOR POSSIBLE EILAT THREAT: Shin Bet Chief David Zini has reportedly instructed senior officials to prioritize preparations for a possible attack on Eilat, viewing the city as a security vulnerability due to its isolated geographic location.
According to sources, Zini warned of the possibility of a ground incursion into the city, particularly from the Jordanian border, and potentially from the maritime domain as well. Sources said he directed intelligence units to prepare for such a scenario.
However, members of the Israeli defense establishment reportedly question both the significance Zini assigns to the threat and whether there is any intelligence indicating that an attack is actually being planned.
⚔️ CRITICISM GROWS OVER IDF RULES OF ENGAGEMENT IN SOUTHERN LEBANON: Following the deaths of five IDF soldiers in southern Lebanon, military correspondent Hallel Bitton-Rosen published a sharply critical commentary arguing that current Israeli policy is unnecessarily restricting military operations and placing soldiers at greater risk.
According to Bitton-Rosen, repeated statements by Prime Minister Netanyahu, Defense Minister Katz, and Chief of Staff Zamir about "removing threats" reflect an approach that allows soldiers to act primarily against immediate dangers rather than proactively targeting enemy infrastructure and operatives.
He argued that soldiers should be granted broader freedom of action to destroy threats before they materialize, rather than waiting until troops are directly endangered.
Bitton-Rosen further claimed that approval requirements for certain offensive actions have frustrated field commanders and damaged confidence among soldiers operating in southern Lebanon.
He argued that while thousands of troops remain deployed under dangerous conditions, political and military leaders have effectively constrained operational flexibility despite ongoing security threats.
The commentary also criticized Netanyahu's reaffirmation of the Lebanon ceasefire following difficulties in U.S.-Iran negotiations, arguing that the message projected weakness at a time when Israel was mourning fallen soldiers and facing continued tensions along the northern front.
Bitton-Rosen concluded that the current situation is unsustainable and called on Israeli leadership to grant the IDF greater operational freedom in southern Lebanon.
