🇮🇱 KATZ-IDF COMMAND DISPUTE, IDF EXERCISES, HEAT AND EARTHQUAKE

🎖️ KATZ ANNOUNCES CENTRAL COMMAND SUCCESSOR WITHOUT IDF COORDINATION: Defense Minister Israel Katz said Maj. Gen. Dado Bar Kalifa would replace Maj. Gen. Avi Bluth as head of the IDF Central Command. Bluth has held the position since July 2024, while Central Command chiefs normally serve for two to three years.
Katz linked his criticism of Bluth to an administrative restraining order against Tal Yinon Dardik, which was later repealed on a technicality. Katz said Bluth and the Military Advocate General’s Corps acted contrary to his policy by appealing Dardik’s release and said he wanted commanders who pursue decisive victory, strike Israel’s enemies and protect settlers.
The IDF said the announcement had not been coordinated with Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir, who did not intend to change key commanders during the current sensitive period. It said any such appointment would be initiated by the Chief of Staff and approved through established procedures.
🏛️ DEFENSE MINISTRY DEFENDS THE APPOINTMENT PROCESS: Katz’s office later said Zamir had recommended Bar Kalifa at the end of April and asked Katz to interview him. Katz conducted the interview in June and accepted the recommendation, with the transfer expected during the next round of senior appointments.
The ministry said Katz favors commanders with proven records of offensive operations and success during what it called the “War of Revival,” in line with the security policy advanced by Katz and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
🗳️ CRITICS ALLEGE POLITICAL INFLUENCE OVER THE ANNOUNCEMENT: Israeli critics argued that Katz’s live television statement appeared influenced by Likud primary considerations and political pressure from Gotliv. They also highlighted Katz’s reversal after describing Bluth eight months earlier as the best commander of his kind in decades.
Criticism also focused on announcing the replacement without prior coordination with the Chief of Staff during a sensitive operational period. Beit El Council head Shai Alon accused Katz of dismissing a commander who established 104 communities to gain primary votes, while the Yesha Council expressed support for Bluth and said local authority leaders would meet Katz.
🛡️ PREPLANNED IDF EXERCISES BEGIN AT SEA AND IN RA’ANANA: A naval exercise will continue through Tuesday evening between Shavei Tzion and Ashdod, with increased movement of security forces and vessels.
A separate exercise will run from Monday evening through Tuesday morning in Ra’anana, involving lighting equipment, military forces and emergency vehicles. Both were scheduled as part of the IDF’s 2026 training program and are not connected to a security incident.
🔥 EXTREME HEAT EASES SLIGHTLY AFTER SEASONAL PEAK: Sunday was Israel’s hottest day of the season, with temperatures reaching 34°C in Jerusalem, 33°C with high humidity in Tel Aviv, 43.9°C in Tiberias, 44.5°C in Eilat and 45.3°C in Gilgal.
Monday will remain extremely hot, with forecast highs of approximately 33°C in Jerusalem and Tel Aviv, 41°C in Tiberias, Beit She’an and the Dead Sea region, and 43°C in Eilat. Orange heat warnings remain in effect in several regions, with an elevated afternoon wildfire risk in the eastern valleys.
🌍 EGYPT EARTHQUAKE FELT ACROSS SOUTHERN AND CENTRAL ISRAEL: A moderate earthquake struck shortly after 3:00 a.m., with its epicenter approximately 40 kilometers north of Suez. Monitoring agencies issued preliminary magnitude estimates ranging from 5.0 to 5.6, while some Google alerts initially estimated 5.9.
The earthquake was felt in Cairo, Sinai, Eilat, the Arava, the Dead Sea region, Beersheba, the southern lowlands and areas near Jerusalem. No injuries or significant damage were reported in Egypt or Israel.
