🌍 IRAN STRIKE PAUSED AS HORMUZ TALKS TEST U.S. REGIONAL STRATEGY

🌐 REGIONAL MEDIATION PRODUCES A PRELIMINARY HORMUZ FRAMEWORK: Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman spoke with President Trump on Saturday, expressed concern over plans for massive new strikes against Iran and urged him to pursue de-escalation. Pakistan, Turkey, the UAE and Qatar also pressed Washington and Tehran to avoid further military action.
Qatari mediators held separate discussions with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, U.S. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and Omani officials. Their proposal reportedly called for the immediate and complete reopening of the Strait of Hormuz as part of a broader agreement addressing Iran’s nuclear threat.
Trump announced that he had agreed to cancel the planned attack, subject to the rapid completion of a deal. He said the United States remained “locked and loaded,” but that Iran and other regional countries had requested that Washington hold off because the framework of an agreement had been established. Trump added that Israel had joined the commitment.
Diplomats said Iran had responded positively in principle to the Qatari-U.S. proposal. Iran denied that any agreement had been reached, however, and said the Strait would remain closed while what it described as hostile U.S. actions continued. A source close to the Iranian negotiating team said shipping would be permitted only through a designated route and with authorization from the IRGC Navy.
Major disagreements reportedly remain over control of shipping lanes and transit fees. N12 noted that previous reports of arrangements concerning the Strait were followed by renewed missile fire and bombing.
⚖️ ISRAELI OFFICIALS QUESTION REPEATED U.S. REVERSALS: The cancellation marked the second time in one week that Israel was reportedly informed of an imminent U.S. attack before the operation was called off.
An Israeli security official told Channel 11: “Washington informed us for the second time in a week of an imminent attack that could shake the Middle East before canceling it at the last minute without explanation, and this harms Israel's operational readiness and drains it.”
According to the Israeli Broadcasting Authority, Israeli officials increasingly believe Trump is prioritizing an agreement with Iran over additional military action.
The Wall Street Journal reported growing frustration among Gulf states over what they view as an inconsistent U.S. strategy. Saudi Arabia is advocating diplomacy while seeking stronger American security guarantees, fearing that a prolonged conflict could expose regional states and critical infrastructure to Iranian retaliation. The UAE reportedly believes stronger U.S. military action is necessary to compel Iranian concessions.
An Iranian diplomat told the newspaper that Iranian officials were aware of Trump’s political vulnerability and might attempt to exploit it. The diplomat added that the IRGC was considering preemptive strikes if diplomacy failed, even without an initial U.S. attack.
