🚫 GENEVA TALKS END WITHOUT BREAKTHROUGH AS IRAN REJECTS U.S. DEMANDS TO END ENRICHMENT, DISMANTLE FACILITIES, AND REMOVE URANIUM; TECHNICAL TALKS SET DESPITE PERSISTENT GAPS
🔸 GENEVA TALKS END WITHOUT BREAKTHROUGH: U.S. envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner were “disappointed” by what they heard from the Iranians during the morning negotiating session, Axios reported. The evening session remained ongoing.
The U.S. delegation later left the negotiation venue in Geneva, Iranian TV reported. In Israel, the assessment is that the gaps between the U.S. and Iran cannot be bridged.
The Omani Foreign Ministry said U.S.–Iran talks made “significant progress” today. It said discussions will resume soon after consultations, with technical meetings set for next week in Vienna.
A U.S. official told Axios: “The nuclear talks with Iran in Geneva were positive”.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqhchi said: “Today's round was the best among all the rounds. We have clearly presented our demands to the American side. We have made good progress on the nuclear issue and the lifting of sanctions. There is an agreement on some points, but there are also differences. Each party needs to consult with its government”.
Araqhchi also said “good progress” was made after the third round of talks with the U.S. in Geneva. Technical discussions between the two sides are scheduled for Monday, with Tehran requesting the lifting of certain sanctions.
“Today’s negotiations were among the most serious conversations we’ve had with the United States. We have entered serious discussions regarding sanctions relief and the nuclear issue,” Araqhchi told Iran’s state media. “Iran has clearly expressed its demands regarding the lifting of sanctions and the process for easing them. Each side needs to consult with its government,” he added.
An Iranian official told Al Jazeera: “The chances of success in negotiations with Washington are high, unless they are hindered by parties pushing for escalation and war”.
In reality, there was zero progress in today’s negotiations. So why is the Iranian minister sounding so optimistic? To create the impression - particularly among the America First crowd - that any potential war would be solely because of Israel, and that in reality there is no legitimate reason for it.
🔸 WSJ: IRAN REJECTED ALL U.S. CORE DEMANDS: The Wall Street Journal reported Iran rejected all of the U.S. demands in the latest round of talks. The report said talks in Geneva wrapped up without a deal, with both sides still far apart on key issues.
According to the WSJ, Iran rejected the idea of moving uranium stockpiles out of the country. It also objected to ending enrichment, dismantling nuclear facilities, and permanent restrictions on its program.
A separate WSJ report based on talks with sources and media reports in Iran said Iran refused to hand over its uranium stockpiles to another country, refused to dismantle large nuclear facilities, refused to stop uranium enrichment, and does not agree to impose temporary restrictions on its nuclear program.
An Iranian official told CNN: “Ending all US sanctions and UN Security Council resolutions is the key to any agreement. No facilities and/or equipment will be destroyed, as all of them are registered sites and under the supervision of the IAEA”.
