The Irgun ship arrived during Israel’s 1948 War of Independence carrying immigrants, fighters, weapons and military equipment. On June 22, 1948, IDF fire struck the vessel off Tel Aviv and it went up in flames, killing 16 Irgun members and three IDF soldiers. Menachem Begin urged his followers not to retaliate, helping prevent the confrontation from expanding toward civil war. About a year later, the burned-out hull was refloated, towed farther offshore and scuttled.
