Damascus condemned the strike as a violation of Syrian sovereignty.
Separately, Defense Minister Israel Katz rejected U.S. Ambassador to Turkey Tom Barrack’s claim that Israel’s strike on the Abu al-Duhur airfield was connected to elections. Katz said the IDF had repeatedly recommended the strike based on intelligence that Turkey intended to conduct activities there that could threaten Israel, adding that Syria was warned at senior levels and relevant intelligence was shared with U.S. authorities before the operation was approved.
Katz said Turkey ultimately retreated after the strike and accused Barrack of presenting an inaccurate account. According to i24 News, however, elements of Israel’s security establishment were unhappy with public statements by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Katz taking responsibility for the operation, preferring that it retain a lower profile.
