๐ DIGEST | U.S.-IRAN TALKS, ISRAEL TARGETS IRAN'S FINANCIAL NETWORK, AND REGIONAL SECURITY COORDINATION
๐ U.S.-Iran Talks Center on the Strait of Hormuz: Negotiations between Washington and Tehran resumed in Doha with maritime security emerging as the central issue. According to Axios, the United States urged Iran to abandon plans to impose transit tolls in the Strait of Hormuz, arguing that sanctions relief under a broader nuclear agreement would provide far greater economic benefit. Iran also announced that part of its $6 billion in previously frozen assets will be used to purchase goods through Qatar, while Axios reported both sides agreed to avoid confrontation in the Strait for at least one week.
๐ค Regional Security Coordination Expands: CENTCOM convened senior military leaders from across the Middle East in Bahrain to discuss regional security, defense cooperation, and safeguarding commercial navigation through the Strait of Hormuz. The conference marked the first U.S.-led regional defense forum attended by both Syrian and Lebanese military leaders. Separately, President Trump dismissed reports that he had considered renewing large-scale military action against Iran, saying recent U.S. strikes had significantly affected Iran.
โ Additional Regional Security Incidents: A U.S. Navy MH-60S Seahawk assigned to the USS George H.W. Bush made an emergency water landing in the Arabian Sea. Three crew members were rescued while the search continued for a fourth. The U.S. 5th Fleet said there was no indication of hostile action and opened an investigation. In Iran, IRGC Navy political official Rear Adm. Mohammad Akbarzadeh was killed in a car accident, while an Iranian police officer was killed in an armed attack in Sistan and Baluchestan Province.
๐ฐ Israel Targets Iran's Terror Financing Network: Defense Minister Israel Katz imposed sanctions on 37 cryptocurrency wallets linked to the IRGC containing more than NIS 24 million in digital assets. Israeli authorities said the network had transferred tens of millions of dollars over several years to Hezbollah and other Iranian-backed terrorist organizations, with Hezbollah becoming increasingly reliant on these funding channels following wartime losses.
๐ก๏ธ Economic Pressure and Counterintelligence Efforts Continue: Israeli officials described the sanctions as part of a broader campaign targeting the financial infrastructure supporting Hezbollah, Hamas, the Houthis, and other Iranian proxies. Katz said the campaign is fought financially as well as militarily, while National Bureau Director Yorai Matzlaui stressed that cryptocurrency does not provide immunity for terrorism financing. Separately, the Israel Security Agency (Shin Bet) announced the arrest of a 20-year-old U.S. citizen accused of gathering intelligence inside Israel on behalf of Iranian intelligence in exchange for payment.
๐ฑ๐ง U.S.-Brokered Lebanon Framework Advances: CENTCOM Commander Adm. Brad Cooper continued meetings in Israel and Lebanon focused on implementing the Washington framework agreement signed last week. He met Lebanese President Joseph Aoun, Lebanese Armed Forces Commander Gen. Rodolphe Haykal, Israeli officials, and U.S. troops deployed in the region, where more than 50,000 American personnel remain stationed.
