๐๏ธ COALITION DEAL AND IDF MANPOWER SHORTAGES
๐๏ธ COALITION CRISIS TEMPORARILY AVERTED: A deal was reached between Prime Minister Netanyahu and the ultra-Orthodox parties: elections on October 20 in exchange for legislation.
Shas chairman Rabbi Aryeh Deri and United Torah Judaism chairman MK Rabbi Moshe Gafni said in a joint statement:
โWe held a meeting today with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and conveyed to him, on behalf of the great rabbis of Israel, a clear and unequivocal demand to immediately advance the Basic Law: Torah Study and the law to stop the arrests of Torah students, by convening the Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee and the Knesset Committee this week. We made it clear that if we do not see concrete action as we demanded, we will support the dissolution of the Knesset as early as next week. The Prime Minister made clear in the meeting that he is committed to passing the laws and will work for their rapid advancement.โ
๐ก๏ธ IDF CHIEF OF STAFF: THOUSANDS MORE SOLDIERS NEEDED: IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir met senior Religious Zionist rabbis and yeshiva leaders to discuss manpower shortages, women in combat roles, and the Joint Service Order.
The meeting included senior IDF commanders. Zamir expressed appreciation for the longstanding contribution of yeshiva and pre-military academy students to IDF service, particularly their major role and sacrifices during the current war.
Zamir said the IDF remains short thousands of combat soldiers and requires additional personnel to meet operational demands across multiple fronts while preserving wartime achievements.
He stressed that every soldier, male and female, is needed to fulfill the IDF's missions.
Zamir said integrating diverse populations into military service depends on maintaining the IDF's Joint Service Order, which is intended to allow different populations to serve together while preserving the dignity and beliefs of all service members.
He said the IDF will continue strengthening enforcement of the policy despite the challenges created by an extended wartime environment.
Addressing the expansion of women into key and combat positions, Zamir said the process will continue due to operational importance. He said new frameworks and positions will be implemented in full accordance with the Joint Service Order during routine service, emergencies and wartime, and will be based on operational requirements and professional standards without compromise.
The rabbis praised the IDF's leadership during the war and reiterated their commitment to encouraging meaningful military service. They also raised concerns regarding the challenges faced by observant soldiers and stressed the importance of ensuring that religious service members can serve in accordance with their religious beliefs and values.
Zamir concluded that Israel has one army, the people's army, which must be able to accommodate the diversity and complexities of Israeli society while enabling meaningful service for all sectors and maintaining military readiness.
